Description: Free Domestic Shipping. This is an original wrapper (it's real deal--this is NOT a reproduction) that once contained a now-gone letter that was taken to the post office by the writer and mailed. It is a "stampless folded wrapper" You are purchasing only the postal portion; I do not have the letter portion. ONE of the reasons it is collectible is because of the fact that the local postmaster applied postal markings considered appropriate for the letter's journey. In addition to being collectible because the addressee or the town from which it was sent, it is a collectable item of postal history because of the rates, markings and usage. This item has never been offered for sale before. It is from an original correspondence that came to market in 2009. All for one money, you get 11 Charlottesville items--as described below. All items are in the first photograph. Then each item is scanned in the subsequent photos only once--except for the last two items, which have their other side scanned in the last photograph.ALL FORWARDED OR MIS-SENT items!!!1) 1845 wrapper to Professor Minor originating at Madison Court House with five cent rate. Charlottesville PM forwarded it to UVA with another five cents due.2) 1852 wrapper to Professor Minor (with toning on reverse) originating at Pattonsburg with a really cool HOLLOW "5." The Charlottesville PM did not charge an additional five cents because it was addressed to the University of Virginia already. He struck his CDS and a "MIS-SENT." to explain the delay and sent it on.3) 1853 wrapper to Professor Minor originating in Tappahannock with a way-cool big "5" in a degraded circle. The Charlottesville PM applied a perfect strike of his CDS and a straight-line "FORWARDED" and wrote a tiny "5" in manuscript within the Tappahannock "5" and drew a line to total to "10" (due) and readdressed it to "University."4) 1846 wrapper to Professor Minor originating in New York City. The Charlottesville PM applied a strike of his red CDS and wrote "Forw'd" and a teeny tiny "5" in manuscript within the New York CDS that already had "10" and drew a line to total to "15" (due) and readdressed it to "University."5) 1846 wrapper with toning and file damage to Professor Minor originating in New York City. The Charlottesville PM applied a strike of his black CDS and wrote "Forw'd" and "10" and "5" in manuscript next to the New York CDS that already had "10" and drew a line to total to "15" (due) and readdressed it to "University."6) 1846 Wrapper to Professor Minor that originated in New York. The Charlottesville PM wrote "Missent" and struck his red datestamp and sent it on its way as it was addressed to "University of Virginia."7) 1840 Wrapper to R. B. Gooch that originated in Cambridge, Mass. The Charlottesville PM wrote "Missent" and struck his red datestamp and sent it on its way as it was addressed to "University of Virginia."8) 1850 #10 COPPER BROWN on an envelope with "CHARLOTTESVILLE Va. OCT 15" and a grid to tie the stamp sent to Brick Union. Somehow the letter got to Palmyra on the Way to Brick Union and the PM there--armed with a heavy hand struck "PALMYRA Va." in red and three small "PAID 3" cancels--everything struck messy--and re-addressed it to Fork Union. Some edge wear. Opened on two sides. 9) 1852 #11 on a folded wrapper originating at Gravel Hill on July 14th addressed to Professor of the Law School in Charlottesville. The Charlottesville PM struck his datestamp and applied a "5" for the non-prepaid forwarding and wrote "University" and sent it on.10) 1850s U10 envelope originating in Charlottesville sent to Rockbridge Baths. The Rockbridge Bath's PM readdressed it to "Bremo Bluff, Fluvanna Co., Va." and wrote "For'd Due 3" and sent it on. Edge wear and some tears.11) 1880s "CHARLOTTESVILLE VA." and REVERSE CRUDE "75" on cover to Gordonsville. The next day on arrival in Gordonsville, the postmaster there readdressed it to Hot Springs and applied his CDS and Target and a "FORWARDED" and sent it on. Roughly opened tearing the stamp.
