She was the flagship of Commodore Winfield Scott Schley’s “Flying Squadron” and participated in the naval battle off Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898. In this battle, the USS Brooklyn was a key vessel, and although she was struck 20 times by whole shot, Brooklyn suffered only one man wounded (Fireman J.
