Fine large engraved 18th century map with original hand-coloring. Image size: 18.75 x 21.25 inches – Paper size : 21 x 23.75 inches. In addition to the title cartouche, there is a title in English along the top margin. The map depicts all of the British Isles (England Scotland and Ireland) – with each country in contrasting colors. Provinces and counties are named and delineated. Topographical features are very well defined with most major towns, cities, mountains, land routes and water routes identified. The inset, upper left, depicts the “Orcades Insulae”. The decorative cartouche in the upper left includes the British coat-of-arms. Homann produced maps that were exceptional for their clarity & comprehensiveness. “The founder of the dominant dynasty of German 18th century cartographers...He was one of the first to color his maps at origin...” (Portinaro & Knirsch The Cartography of North America, p. 315).This is an original, almost 300 years old, not a reproduction, and its condition is shown in the photos. It has some wear and stains, Folded as issued. Verso (back) is blank. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
