These works contain the historical account of the Peloponnesian War as written by Thucydides, an Athenian historian who also served as an Athenian general during the war.Whilst the account is offered in its original Greek text, Thomas Arnold, an educator and historian, gives additional notes in English. With a bookplate to the front pastedown of Volume I featuring the emblem of Rugby School, of which Thomas Arnold was the headmaster from 1828 to 1841. He introduced several influential reforms that redefined standards of masculinity and achievement. With three folding maps to Volume I and three to the rear of Volume II. CONDITION In signed half calf binding by J. B. Hawkes. Externally, smart. With spotting to the leather and slight rubbing to the extremities. With two bookplates to the front pastedown of Volume I belonging to Rugby School. One bookplate to Volume II front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a few spots to the endpapers and heavier spotting to the folding maps.
