Charlton sent Daly's letter to Davis' son, Willie J. Davis. Davis had been an assistant passenger manager in Chicago as a young man in the 1870s and throughout his life retained associations with railroad passenger agents. His affection for railroads, in addition to youthful memories, was connected to his father having worked in constructing the Lake Shore RR and to his occupation as a theater advance agent, traveling the country on rails with theater companies.
