Description: 9 1/4"H x 4 1/2"Dia (base). Very unique handmade ceramic "barro negro" Mexican folk art single-candle holder, likely from Oaxaca circa 1950, complete with handle, ventilation holes at the top, and oblong center opening which contains a spiral wax candle, unburned. The distinctive black color of Barro Negro comes from the unique clay found in the area, known as "barro de Oaxaca" or Oaxacan clay. Due to the iron rich quality of the clay, black clay undergoes a specific firing process that results in the dark, shiny finish characteristic of barro negro pottery. Wear includes scuffs and scratches to the paint, some wax residue at the base of the pan, and some dust and debris residue throughout the interior due to age and use.
