Here are 3 sturdy pieces of fossil bone from an Allosaurus fragilis. Allosaurus was the apex predator of its time, living in the Jurassic, about 145-155 million years ago. This was long before the first T Rex (66-70 million years ago). Most Allosaurus skeletons have been found in Western North America in the Morrison Formation, particularly in Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Colorado. Allosaurus, and other bones from the Jurassic, are usually more “agatized” (more of a rock-like texture) than Cretaceous bones. Allosaurus means “Different Lizard” because (at the time it was named) it was unique in having concave vertebrae. It was a carnosaurian theropod (meat eater). It was named in 1877 by Othniel Charles Marsh. Allosaurus is the Jurassic State Fossil of Utah. These specimens are from the Morrison Formation, in Colorado. Found with hundreds of other partial bones belonging to Allosaurus. The 3 of them together weigh 210 grams (7.45 oz.). Sizes vary from about 1.2" to over 2" (see photos). You get the exact ones in the photos. Allosaurus fragilis could grow to 30 feet long (smaller than T Rex but still scary) and was a bipedal predator. Its’ arms were longer than T Rex, each with 3 killer claws (T Rex had 2 claws on each short arm).
