Description: This is an Auto-Lite Carbide Mining Helmet Lamp, produced by the Universal Lamp Company in Chicago, Illinois, around 1930. Auto-Lite mining lamps were produced from 1913 through 1960, most following the design Jacob Sherman patented in 1924. This lamp is in very good condition. Carbide lamps have a chamber for water and another chamber for calcium carbide. A valve controls the amount of water that drips into the lower chamber, which in turn controls the amount of acetylene gas produced and the size of the flame.
