Description: This exceptional 19th Century Northwest Coast Native Bentwood Box was decommissioned from the Seattle Aquarium in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Likely crafted by the Tlingit, Haida, or Tsimshian peoples, this stunning piece of tribal art is made from a single piece of bent cedar wood and showcases intricate carvings on all sides. The box measures approximately 13x13x13 inches and is an outstanding example of traditional Northwest Coast craftsmanship. Notably, the box is fastened with hand-forged nails at one corner and along the bottom, further attesting to its age. Although the box no longer has its lid, it remains a beautifully preserved piece. There are some insect holes and wear that are consistent with its age please see photos for details. Similar bentwood boxes have sold for upwards of $100,000 at major auction houses. Serious collectors will appreciate the rarity of craftsmanship and cultural significance of this piece. Pieces of this quality are rarely available for sale. Please see my other auction for another piece decommissioned from the same collection. Please note that I'm not in a hurry to sell this masterpiece and will not entertain low-ball offers. Feel free to reach out with any questions or for additional details.
