Description: BEP souvenir card B 59 FUN 1983 back 1890 $100 Watermelon Treasury Note Mint BEP souvenir card B 59 FUN 1983 back 1890 $100 Watermelon Treasury Note MintDEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY BUREAU OF ENGRAVING AND PRINTING WASHINGTON, D.C. The above note features the reverse of the $100 Treasury or "Coin" note issued under legislation of July 14, 1890. These notes were backed by metallic reserves, hence the term coin notes. All such notes were redeemable in either gold or silver at the discretion of the Secretary of the Treasury. The "Coin" notes were issued in Series 1890 and 1891 only. The $100 and $1,000 notes of the 1890 series bear ornately engraved backs and get the name of "watermelon" notes because of the obvious and intricate rounded design of the zeros. They also bear an unusual legend, "This note is legal tender at its face value in payment of all debts public and private except when otherwise expressly stipulated in the contract." printed as a souvenir card forFLORIDA UNITED NUMISMATISTS, INC.28TH ANNUAL CONVENTION ORLANDO.
