Description: In 1864 General John Corse and his brigade of Illinois & Minnesota troops heroically held Altoona Pass, Georgia against an assault by 6,000 Confederate troops after receiving a signal from General WT Sherman on Kennesaw Mountain "Hold the Fort I am coming". Corse & his men held on despite heavy losses. This historical incident was first related by Major Daniel W Whittle at a Sunday-school meeting in Rockford, Illinois, May, 1870, when Whittle was an Evangelist preacher and Philip P Bliss his song leader. The feat inspired the 1870 religious song "Hold the Fort!' by Bliss. The original complete 1870 sheet music for "Hold the Fort!" by P.P. Bliss, with the 1870 copyright by Root & Cady, Chicago, including a preface in honor of Major D.W. Whittle of Chicago who first related the story. 5pp 10.5 x 13.5".
