Claire Lee Chennault Commander Flying Tigers ''Rare'' Signed Autograph & Tigers

Description: General Claire Lee Chennault [1890 1958] was an American military aviator and major general who commanded the U.S. Army Air Forces in China [1942 1945] and created the American Volunteer Group [AVG] best known as the ''Flying Tigers''. Chennault began his military career in 1917 when he enlisted in the U.S Army where he completed flight training and served until, he was honorably discharged in 1920. Chennault then received a regular commission and trained and served with the Air Corps Tactical School where he authored well received manuals and books on fighter tactics. Chennault's theories on air tactics put him at odds with his superiors which led to his retirement in 1937 with the rank of captain. Chennault's ideas attracted the attention of China and Chennault was hired as an air advisor to general Chiang Kai-shek in 1937. In 1937 China went to war with Japan and Chennault began rebuilding the Chinese Air Force and in 1941 he created the famed Flying Tigers, a squadron of volunteer U.S pilots who were trained by Chennault to defend China against the Japanese invasion. The unit achieved an outstanding combat record and was incorporated into the regular U.S Army Air Force as the China Air Task Force [later reorganized as the 14th Air Force] with general Chennault as the commander. The squadron achieved great success against Japanese forces and in 1943 Chennault was promoted to major general. In 1946 Chennault returned to China and established ''CAT'' a Civil Air Transport which transported munitions and troops for the Nationalist government. Listed for auction is a stunning framed display which contains the autograph of general Claire Chennault along with [15] fifteen members of the Flying Tigers [AVG] American Volunteer Group along with a vintage theatre made World War II CBI patch. The display is centered around a striking color image of general Chennault in uniform. Mounted in the center of the display is the autograph of general Claire Chennault signed ''C.L. Chennault'' in black fountain pen on a page. The page measures approximately 3.50 x 1.25 inches, it is in fine condition and was removed from a document [signed check]. Mounted below are two gold general's stars [reproductions] and above is a World War II era United States Army [CBI] China Burma India shoulder patch. This is an original handmade patch, not a reproduction. The patch measures 2.50 x 3.00 inches, it has wear/soiling but again it is an original and a desirable example. Mounted on the left side of the display is a bookplate containing the Flying Tiger logo and is signed by [15] fifteen Flying Tigers. The bookplate is for the book titled ''Roar Of A Tiger'' which was written by General James H. Howard. The bookplate contains the following autographs, 1] Joe C. Robert, 2] Ken A. Jernstedt, 3] Paul J. Greene, 4] Charles D. Mott, 5] Dick J. Rossi, 6] Charlie Bond, 7] Robert F. Layher, 8] Robert T. Smith, 9] Rode Rodewald, 10] Robert J. Raine, 11] Robert B. Keeton, 12] Edward F. Rector, 13] Tex Hill, 14] Charles F. Older and 15] C.K Laughlin.  The bookplate measures 5.00 x 8.00 inches and is in fine condition. Mounted below are two professionally engraved bio plaques, one listing the names of the Flying Tigers on the bookplate and the other reads as follows, Claire Lee Chennault September 6, 1893 - July 27, 1958. General Claire Chennault was a United States major general who commanded the U.S. Army Air Forces in China from 1942- 1945 and organized the American Volunteer Group [AVG] forever known as the Flying Tigers. The Flying Tigers were formed in 1941 to defend China against advancing Japanese forces. During the units fifteen months in combat, the group consisted of three fighter squadrons, 90 aircraft, and were credited with destroying 296 enemy aircraft, with the loss of fourteen American pilots. The display itself is stunning and has been professionally assembled and double matted in an army green linen outer matte and accented with a gold inner matte. The display has been completed in a unique gold wood frame which contains stars to the dimensions of 22.00 x18.00 inches. The authentic autograph of general Claire Chennault is rare and uncommon to obtain, the example offered is authentic, accompanied with the autographs of fifteen members of the Flying Tigers, beautifully framed and will be a wonderful addition to any military collection.
