Diplodocus Dinosaur Fossil 85.3mm Bone Cabin Quarry Wyoming WY COA 6654

Description: Welcome to Pioneer Fossils! A Certificate of Authenticity,, which has a color photo on it of the exact item you purchased, will accompany the specimen. Here is a nice piece of Jurassic fossil dinosaur bone from a Diplodocus, a long-neck and long-legged Sauropod (ala the green dinosaur on a Sinclair sign). From the world-famous Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming. It lived in the Jurassic, about 150 million years ago, in what today is called the Morrison Formation. Excavated in 2023, it is a piece of Diplodocus, a Sauropod. It measures 3.36" using calipers at the longest measurement (85.3 mm). No paint or restoration has been applied. It is a single piece. Diplodocus was, for many years, thought to be the longest land animal ever. It grew to a length of about 92 feet (28 meters) and could weigh 13 tons. Diplodocus had only tiny pencil-like teeth that were only in the front of its mouth. And it ate only plants. And more plants. Its brain weighed about 4 oz. Long-legged, it was less robust than Apatosaurus, with thinner bones. First found in 1877, the species name Diplodocus means “double beamed” for the two-pronged bones on the underside of its tail, called chevrons. Other Sauropods have since been found to have chevrons also. The vast majority (probably 99.99% or more) of dinosaur bones never fossilized. They did not have the right conditions to become fossils. A tiny amount had perfect conditions, the right temperature, the right pressure, etc. And they became hard, awesome fossils. There was also a small group that had conditions good enough to harden into fossils, but not perfect. I have many pieces of a femur from a Camarasaurus and also some Diplodocus pieces that are in this group. They are hardened, and will last many, many years if displayed and left alone. However, if you rub or scratch one, you will probably notice some tiny grains come off. And sometimes water can damage these pieces as well. This appears to be one of those pieces, a nice fossil, that will last well into the next century (or beyond) if you avoid unnecessary handling. Very tiny bits may come off in shipping, but not enough to affect the beauty of the piece. We wrap it fully and very carefully. If you are not good with this, please do not order. As fascinating as the Diplodocus was and is, that is only part of the story here. The Bone Cabin Quarry got its name because of its proximity to the famed Bone Cabin. We are going to quote Wikipedia here (which hopefully will be okay since we donate to them annually): "Bone Cabin Quarry is a dinosaur quarry that lies approximately fifty-five miles northwest of Laramie, Wyoming near historic Como Bluff. During the summer of 1897 Walter Granger, a paleontologist from the American Museum of Natural History, came upon a hillside littered with Jurassic period dinosaur bone fragments. Nearby was a sheepherder's cabin built entirely out of fossil bones, hence the name "Bone Cabin Quarry." After Granger's discovery in late August 1897, the quarry was kept secret until the summer of 1898, when the manpower could be amassed to undertake a full-scale excavation. Bone Cabin Quarry was excavated from 1898 until 1905, when the productivity of specimens thinned. Recently, some excavating has resumed there by qualified people. We invite you to visit our store. Some words of caution about COA’s: Do not let them become a substitute for learning about the specimens. We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA’s, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. A COA should be specific to one particular specimen, with a photo of the exact item on it. At Pioneer Fossils, our fossils and minerals come with a COA, and each have a photo of the exact item you just purchased. This assures that the COA can never be transferred to a different specimen.******************************************************************************************************************************************IMPORTANT: If you are not satisfied with your order, please contact us, and let us make it right, before giving any feedback.
