Early JOHN BURTON HARTER Eastham CAPE COD House PAINTING

Description: ORIGINAL 1957 JOHN BURTON HARTER (1940-2002) 'HOME IN EASTHAM' CAPE COD WATERCOLOR PAINTING This is really a wonderful original. When I first saw the painting I liked it very much. It has a wonderful vintage charm to it of an early painting of a home on Cape Cod. I saw it was signed "JBH '57" lower right and I had no idea who the artist was. I turned the painting over and it had an envelope attached to the back. Inside the envelope was a Christmas card from John Burton Harter and his wife to friends with a note about how John had painted this painting of their house on Cape Cod and sent it to them for Christmas. It also had the original mailing label as well as a first copy of a letter in return to the Harters. I was very excited to learn about the history of this painting from these cards. It makes it one of the earliest paintings probably ever available of the important New Orleans artist John Burton Harter. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This is a charming watercolor on paper measuring 9 x 16 1/2 inches. Signed, titled and dated lower right. Painting is in excellent condition with no fading or any sort of issues. The sheet shows some minor rippling but nothing of concern. There is some minor soiling to the margins but also nothing too bad. Original frame is simple and ready to hang. Comes with all the original paperwork I found in the envelope on the back. Frame measures 11 x 18 1/2 inches. For those not familiar with the artist, his biography from askart reads: "John Burton Harter, known to his friends as Burt, was born in Jackson, Mississippi on October 7, 1940. The son of a surgeon and a journalist, he grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. He studied at the University of Louisville, Kentucky; Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Hanover College, Indiana. Post-graduate studies led Harter on a global journey to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; the prestigious Hebrew University in Jerusalem; the University of Vienna in Austria and Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. Moving in the 1960s to New Orleans, Harter, an art historian, made his career in the museum world, starting at the Historic New Orleans Collection and ending as curator of collections at the Louisiana State Museum, before retiring in 1991. Harter's body of work consists of over three thousand paintings, drawings, watercolors and photographs. Most works were created between 1960 and the artist's untimely death in New Orleans in 2002. Harter was especially known for his keen interpretation of gay sensibility, including his most personal creation of an AIDS wall, a tribute to over fifty friends who died of AIDS. In addition to a good number of self-portraits, Harter produced numerous landscapes, still life paintings and riveting portraits, inspired by his travels around the globe. Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, and Tibet were favorite destinations. During his lifetime, Harter's works were shown in New York, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and San Francisco. Posthumously, his work has been shown in New York at the Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation (2003 and 2004), the University of Southern Mississippi Museum in Hattiesburg (2004), Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, Louisiana (2004), and the Louisville Visual Arts Center (2005). His work was included in Classicism Subverted at Plat du Jour in Paris (2005). The New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center presented The Culture of Queer: A Tribute to J. B. Harter, an exhibition with catalogue curated and written by David S. Rubin, in the summer of 2005. This exhibition opened in New York at the Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation in May 2006. Encounters with the Male Nude, Paintings and Drawings by J.B. Harter was published in 1997 (Editions Aubrey Walter, GMP Publishers Ltd., Swaffham, England, 1997) and The Drawings of J.B. Harter edited by Charles W. Leslie, text by John Burton Harter, was published, posthumously, in 2003 (The John Burton Harter Charitable Trust and The Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation, New York, NY, 2003). Harter's works are part of the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art; the Louisiana State Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana; the Historic New Orleans Collection in New Orleans; the Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation in New York, New York; and numerous other public and private collections. The John Burton Harter Charitable Trust was established in 2002 and aims to preserve, publish and exhibit the artist's work in addition to funding scholarships and exhibitions relating to the art of John Burton Harter.
