Stick it on a guitar or bass case, skateboard, a mirror, keyboard, bike, helmet, back window of a truck or the bumper of a sedan - not gonna stick too well on a battle vest though (patches soon, hopefully, and pins available very soon!) --- The Emo scene bloomed from the revolution summer movement of bands from DC in the 80s. Bands like Rites of Spring, Fugazi, and Embrace were arguably (but I would say definitively) of the sound that would inspire the bands going forward - an offshoot of hardcore-punk but still staying within those roots. The 90s brought a grungier, thicker tone to emo or full melancholic and gloomy acoustic - Sunny Day Real Estate, Cap'n Jazz, Mineral, Knapsack, The Promise Ring, Appleseed Cast and Braid were just among a few. At the same time, the first wave of what would later be coined as screamo was emerging as well - arguably starting in the San Diego soon by the likeness of area bands like Swing Kids and Antioch Arrow as well as Portraits of Past, would give way to a grittier and harsher tone by bands like Pageninetynine, Majority Rule, Joshua Fit for Battle, Orchid, and later Circle Takes the Square. All of this set the blueprints for the term to be used as blanket term for any music outside of metal that had screamy vocals - which is and has been amusing in its own right, but referred to a very particular genre within a particular range of sound and style. A confusing time for metalcore.
