INCOMPLETE, but if one might live without the foldout map, and a handful of images, here is all the narrative. Very Good. Travel account of English slave trading forts and African manners and customs along the mouth of the Gambia River. The geographer Francis Moore (1708-1756) kept a daily journal during his time as factor for the Royal Africa Company from 1730 to 1735. In addition to his observations of African culture and the region's natural history, he included "anecdotes of his colleagues' vagaries in these isolated outstations, where many found solace only in heavy drinking" (ODNB). Upon his return to England, Moore published his journals with an appendix of related works, including the previously unpublished manuscript of Bartholomew Stibbs's voyage. Travels into the Inland Parts of Africa remained "the most comprehensive account of West African geography...until the publication of Mungo Park's Travels in 1799" (ODNB). In 1731, Moore went to Gillyfree [and] encountered an independent trader, Captain Pyke, who had arrived from Joar with a ship loaded with slaves bound for Maryland. One of the slaves, a distinguished scholar and prince by the name of Job Ben Solomon, was a year later discovered by his master, a Maryland planter, to speak and write perfect Arabic. Job was therefore despatched to England where he made the acquaintance of Sir Hans Sloane, was introduced to court, and employed in the translation of a number of Arabic documents and inscriptions. After fourteen months he was returned to Gambia with gifts from Queen Caroline, Prince William, the Duke of Montague and the Earl of Pembroke. There he was treated with great respect and befriended by Moore whom he accompanied on numerous trips..." (Howgego, p. 730).
