Description: FREE CUBA is a scarce pre-Spanish American War title, setting out the causes and justifications for the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898), which the United States will join for the final three months in 1898. It is copiously illustrated and contains sections on Cuban history, causes of the present war, the prosperity of Cuba, conditions in the rebel camp and Spanish prison, and a history of the Cuban revolution of 1895. It is clearly written for an American audience and mentions in the preface that the Cuban revolution reflects "America's early struggles for independence." Embossed leather boards, silver gilt titles, copiously illustrated, 617 pages, 5.75" by 7.75" by 1.75". Good antique condition. The embossed leather boards have rubbing on the edges and some loss of material on the head and heel of the spine, which is very brittle. The silver gilt lettering is still bright. The back hinge is split and the front has started. The text is clean and unmarked except for a penciled price on the fly leaf, a penciled gift inscription, and a small scribble on the illustrations page. Binding is solid.
