It was named for William Grayson, delegate to the Continental Congress from 1784 to 1787 and one of the first two U.S. Senators from Virginia. Grayson County was at the crossroads of the Great Wagon Road (northeast to southwest, from PA through Shenandoah Valley, current day Route 11) and the Wilderness Road (current day Route 58). Many travelers passed through on their way to Georgia and Kentucky. Some decided to settle in Grayson County. Scanned copies of the original hand-written census.
