It’s taken 9 lives and to this day is considered one of the most haunted locations in the area. On October 25, 1994, Susan Smith drove her car to the John D. lake boat ramp. Got out of her car, released the brake, and allowed her car to roll down the boat ramp. Her two young boys strapped inside, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex, both drowning as Susan stood on the shore of the lake and watched. Monuments to the two boys were erected in the summer of 1995, and on August 31st, 1996, a group of 10 people came to visiting the spot and pay tribute to the two little boys. The group had driven out to the lake and parked next to the ramp with their Chevrolet Suburban's headlights shining on two memorials to the Smith boys. Five of the group had gotten out of the vehicle when it started to roll toward the water with four children and an adult inside. It passed between the memorial markers and knocked over a young tree planted in the Smith boys' memory as it slid down the steep embankment into about 20 feet of water. Two adults dove into the lake to help, and both drowned along with the four children inside. The father of the children was behind the wheel and also drowned. Unexpectedly to investigators, when the vehicle was recovered the gear shift was found in the park position, investigators couldn’t explain why the SUV would have rolled into the water. The unexplained incident killed the entire family from nearby Buffalo: Tim Phillips, 26; his wife, Angie, 22; Courtney, 4; Meleana, 23 months, and 4-month-old Kinsleigh, Also killed were Carl White, 29, and 3-year-old Austin Roodvoets. Soon after in 1997 the state Department of Natural Resources, ordered the removal of the boat ramp, had the memorial monuments moved, and installed a guardrail. We have, after careful investigation and excavation recovered what remained of the infamous boat ramp. The Lake has been investigated by numerous paranormal groups, and has yielding countless pieces of evidence of paranormal activity.
