Located just south of the city of Ancona, along the Adriatic coast, the Santa Casa (Holy House) is one of the most popular pilgrimage shrines in the world. Tradition states that the house in which the Virgin Mary was born, in which the Annunciation occurred, and in which Jesus was raised, was transported by angels to Italy in the 13th century. Pilgrimages began in the 14th century at the site, and by the late 15th century, an elaborate Basilica was built to protect the house and the statue of the black Madonna.
