The words for the carol interpreted in this medal's design were first published in 1850. Their author was Dr. Edmund Sears, an American clergyman who believed that "Peace on earth, good will to men" was Christianity's greatest message. The composer, Richard Willis, was a music critic whose tune appeared the same year as Sears' verses, but separately. Music and verses were finally joined, resulting in one of the best-loved carols in the English-speaking world. The medal is marked sterling on the edge. It is dated 1976.
