Description: Jan 26, 1899 Prado Boulevard Havana Cuba Photo People Park Spanish American War Original antique Photo card - photo mounted on hard cardboard ID writing on the backside . . . photo probably taken by someone present a private individual - no branding present Chairs lined up in the park . . . Background leading up to this timeframe that month: As a result of the Spanish-American War, control of Cuba passed from Spain to the United States on January 1, 1899, and it was governed by direct U.S. military administration until May 20, 1902. On January 1, 1899, Edison photographers recorded the evacuation of Havana, Cuba, when Spanish armies officially left the island. The Library of Congress has two films that show the procession on the Prado, a main boulevard in Havana. One of the films, Troops at evacuation of Havana, depicts the First Texas troops turning into the Prado from a side street, where a triumphal arch had been erected by the Cubans. The film also shows the streets crowded with people, including many typical Cubans and a few Spaniards. The Spanish-American War led to the United States taking control of Cuba from Spain on January 1, 1899. The U.S. military administered Cuba directly until May 20, 1902. About 4 7/8” x 3 1/8”I am interpreting the back side writing as "Prado" rather than Porado . . .? I also have another photo card from earlier in January up for sale right now . . .
