Here we offer a matching first edition set of Louisa May Alcott's classic, Little Women, published by Roberts Brothers, Boston, in 1869 and 1871, respectively. This auction includes both the first and second books, which were originally sold separately, (as the second was actually a sequel due to the popularity of the first,) each issued in gilt-impressed forest green cloth and illustrated by several artists. Both retain their original frontispiece tissues. Part First is a second-year printing (first was 1868) and Part Second is a third-year print (first printed in 1869). Part First has no mention of the second part, which is even yet to be included in the advertisement section at rear. Part First has been reblocked and rebound with original spine remnants applied atop new green spine cloth and new acid-free saddles at gutters and added headbands. Well-worn boards; binding is very tight and square; text and illustrations are very bright and crisp with minor soiling and light moisture stains/foxing on illustration pages (which are made from a more-easily-stained pulp). Part Second has original binding, remarkably well-preserved. Mostly intact endpapers are uninscribed. Edgeworn binding is very tight and square; text and illustrations are very clean, bright and crisp. 341 and 359 pages respectively, followed by several pages of ads. The books measure approximately 6.75 x 5-inches.
