Description: Montgomery, ALABAMA - Oak Park - 1911: The land allotted to the newly formed Friends of Montgomery Botanical Garden at Oak Park runs along the northern edge of the park and includes the area around the northeast picnic shelter, the old monkey island pond and the maintenance buildings where the deer run was. Begun in 1886 by a street car company and a development company with overlapping directors, the park was to be "a place where the public may spend leisure hours in pleasant drives and recreation." Under the leadership of Mayor John Clisby, Montgomery bought the 45-acre tract in 1899. Soon it became a social center for white Montgomerians, a place to see and be seen. It got a boost in the 1930s with a plan by the famous Olmstead Brothers landscape firm. Implemented with $100,000 from Works Progress Administration, it enhanced the design and added more recreational opportunities. This Divided Back Era postcard, mailed in 1911, is in good condition, but shows some edge wear. Published by T. J. Mattox Cigar & Tobacco Co. Montgomery, Ala.
