Description: Original Hand Written Vellum Antique Document - 1671 English Indenture/Deed Can't name the actual language used but I'm sure the origin of the document is English. The mid 1600's in England was a period when the spoken language was in a transition period, from several versions of French and other European languages to modern English. Different regions of the Country were in different phases of the change over so it's difficult to pin down. In addition, the legal profession was employing what was known as 'Law French' which nobody understood except the lawyers. Most documents, like this one, were written using this unique format. But this too, was in a transitional period and by the end of the seventeenth century, it too, had morphed into modern English. I have another vellum document from 1637 which is similar to this one. I found it in York, England and like this one, the odd English words and phrases are evident. For example, in the first line of this one, it refers to 'our most gracious sovereign ...' Surely, referring to the then (in 1671) English King Charles II. I would guess that this document involves individuals of stature ... Common folk, unlike today, couldn't afford the services of lawyers and paying for the hand writing of documents like this and the several hand written copies, one for each of the individuals involved, was beyond the financial capabilities of most. It would be interesting to know who and what was involved here. The vellum is in pretty good shape. It's been folded probably for 350 years but there's no sign of weakness at the foldlines. The ink text is still very legible, slightly faded in some areas. The back side is soiled but really of no consequence. There's a small two sided written note attached to the lower left corner with an old pin. No idea what it is. Possibly an addendum? I'll ship it (mail) folded for free and will include free insurance. Approximate overall size: 21" x 17" _______________________________ Inv.
