This is a large conifer that typically grows in a conical form to 60 to 125 feet in cultivation and the trunks grow to 4 feet in diameter. Ponderosa Pine usually grows best at elevations of 4000-8500 feet and often grows in pure stands. They are long lived and may live to 600 years. The bark helps to distinguish Ponderosa Pine from other species. Mature individuals have cinnamon-red bark with black crevices. Younger trees have black to reddish-brown bark. The tree can often be identified by its characteristic long needles that grow in tufts of two to four (or five) depending on subspecies. The trunk, broken twigs and needles are resinous and have a fragrant aroma. Ponderosa Pine is an important timber tree. Ponderosa Pine was first described by David Douglas in 1826, from eastern Washington near present-day Spokane. It is the official state tree of the State of Montana. Leaf: Evergreen, 5 to 10 inches long, with three (sometimes 2) tough, yellow-green needles per fascicle. When crushed, needles have a turpentine odor sometimes reminiscent of citrus. Flower: Monoecious; males yellow-red, cylindrical, in clusters near ends of branches; females reddish at branch tips. Fruit: Cones are ovoid, 3 to 6 inches long, sessile, red-brown in color, armed with a slender prickle, maturing late summer. Twig: Stout, orange in color, turning black. Buds often covered with resin. Bark: Very dark (nearly black) on young trees, developing cinnamon colored plates and deep furrows. Form: A large tree with an irregular crown, eventually developing a flat top or short conical crown.
