Description: This document is Navy Cross recipient Lieutenant E.A. Stone's navy department endorsement of travel dated December 11, 1917. He was sent to Paris for duty in the U.S. naval aviation force, where he was distinguished for his service with the Navy Cross. While tracking a German submarine, Stone's plane crashed. He was stranded at sea for 82 hours before his eventual recovery. Franklin D Roosevelt signed these documents while acting as assistant secretary of the navy during World War I. Additionally, Vice Admiral W.S. Sims, commander of all U.S. naval forces in Europe during World War I signed the document. These were acquired by my grandparents from DuMouchelles auction house in Detroit.
