They transported the eager men to new mining bonanzas, and away again in times of borrasca. They brought Chinese and Irish track gangs to build ever longer and more roads, and European and Eastern capitalists pointing gold- headed canes in the directions of still greater expansion. In bonanza times the railroads were heavily laden with Nevada's riches of gold and silver ores. From the mills in the always receding stretches of timber they carried great stalwart timbers for the increasing tunnels and the deepening mines. And, of course, all the food, equipment and paraphernalia to support a burgeoning populace rode the rails to the camps. With the exception of a half dozen mining and timbering camps, very little has been written on the economic history of Nevada and the eastern slope of the Sierra since the '80's. This book fills the gap for it is as much a history of the region as it is a railroad hook. The principal mines and mills and their production are all scrupulously detailed together with the personalities who created them. RAILROADS OF NEVADA succeeds in recreating those fabulous times and their vigorous people. It explains how railroad development mostly paralleled the eras of mining prosperity-although some were built to service other industries or to serve towns which are listed today in travel folders as "ghost towns." Stories too of trolleys and tramways, even some boats and flumes are included. They are part of Nevada's varied, dramatic geography-high mountains and vast deserts. The excellencies the book presents are many, but prime among them is the thorough research of the author who succeeded so well in garnering facts and illustrations believed gone with the passage of years. Special attention has been given to mapping in order to visibly orient the reader to every locale and situation described. In fact, it would be a most accurate and reliable travel guide today should the reader choose to wander the streets of the ghost towns and ghost scenes of yesteryear.
