Description: I have been collecting, buying and selling nihonto since 1988 and this is the first one of these I have ever come across. A rare type of Samurai short Kanabou club/mace in full koshirae, mumei, 30 cm, large tanto size, very heavy short and thick, made like nihonto (see the mune) with file marks from a swordsmith. The koshirae is very nice including the lobster menuki which are particularly nice. Fuchi/kashira are horn. Photo # 10 shows the front edge 1/4" thick at the habaki and it narrows to the tip of the edge though there is no sharp edge as it is a club type weapon. There is a small area of pitting 8 1/2" up from the habaki on the ura side which will absolutely polish out. The Kanabou is slightly loose in the saya There were several sword bans enacted during the 264 year Tokugawa regime for various reasons even for some Samurai under certain circumstances and this could have been the reason this was made imitating nihonto. This is heavy and is capable of opening your skull or breaking a limb.
