Description: RÖBEL 1922 Complete Reutergeld Series German Notgeld Fritz Reuter About Reutergeld: Reutergeld is a subcategory of German Series Notgeld issued in 1922 by the towns and cities of the German state of Mecklenburg. There were 70 sets in all, each consisting of three notes, smaller 10 and 25 Pfennig notes and a larger 50 Pfennig note, meaning altogether 210 Reutergeld notes were issued. 'Reutergeld' is named after Fritz Reuter, a local author who wrote in the local Low German dialect, more or less phonetically spelled to indicate what it sounds like. The quotes on each of the notes are Low German quotes from his works, necessitating translation of the notes in order to be read, even for most Germans. There is a great book in German by Ingrid Möller, Das Mecklenburgische Reutergeld von 1921, which has translations of most of the notes into High German. In addition to the goals of promoting the local towns and literature, Reutergeld was essentially a make-work project for the five artists who divided up the 70 different series amongst themselves, to help them make ends meet during the poverty of post-WWI Germany.
