Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-AU X-NONE X-NONE REVOX A77 capstan motor repair kitWhile most electronic repairs can be easily undertaken on vintage Revox tape machines the mechanical repair is another issue. The usual removing of old lubricants and then refreshing with new ones is also relatively straight forward but the capstan motor present all kinds of challenges. When originally made the A77 series tape recorders were only meant to last 3 years but here we are 40 years later and these are the most popular machine to be restored. I have personally restored/repaired well over 500 of these and other REVOX /Studer machines in the last 40 years and in my opinion these machines have well survived their designed life many fold, a testament to the original design and manufacturing, one of the best domestic machines ever made second only to the OTARI MX5050. Enter the A77 repair kit which includes all of the required felts to replace those in either of the two different motors one requires one felt the other 3 felts. Also included is a new clear laser cut acrylic oil seal for the motor the original plastic ones split and disintegrate with age or when trying to lever them out for maintenance. When you do get them out as most people operate these machines standing up the original seals leak oil. The new clear seal lets you see when the oil in the felts is running low and needs servicing. The new felt kits and dust cover fit flush with the top of the casting. If you remove the old felts and they are green in colour it is due to the original Mobil DTE oil extra heavy, iso 150 or the newer Mobil Renolin b 150 hvi plus oil being used as a lubricant , that was all ok if the machine was only 3-5 years old but after 40 years the oil contaminates and degrades the bronze bushed bearings often eating away at them to the point where they are out of tolerance. What happens is the original oil contained sulfates which ate the sintered bronze. sintered bronze is porous and usually will absorb lubricating oil. But in this case the acid produced closes the pores with obvious results and often noisy capstan motors. The same issue happens with Thorens and other turntables, Hammond organs and more. Under no circumstances also use this oil anywhere in an electronic device even as a general purpose lubricant. Another side effect of aging felts is they expand and break down with age and the oil becomes hydroscopic . The correct thickness of a new Felt is 3mm if it is greater than this thickness it has started to break down. The dead set giveaway is if you remove the old felt and it is green you have an acid problem caused by the original oil. In 90% of every machine I have ever serviced the felts are green and no oil left - most likely never have been touched since manufacture. Coming shortly (in production now) I will be selling a synthetic replacement viscosity oil for electronic use, unfortunately it only comes in 44 gallon drums and needs to decanted into 10ml bottles for ease of use. This same kit will also be upgraded over time to include the new oil and a new thrust bearing included (with a small price adjustment) The kit includes the following. 3 x oil felts 1 x laser cut clear acrylic dust capPlease note with all overseas postage unless specified otherwise it will go standard snail mail (economy air in an envelope) with Australia Post, I cannot guarantee how long it will take
