Description: Here you have an original border war era 1 parachute battalion set of metal shoulder flashes and static line wing with red backings. Worn with their mess dress. The red backing was worn by soliders who did operational work in 1985. Red backing was given to paratroopers who had operational experience but was discontinued after a while. This dates back to the 80's as mentioned... Originated after Cassinga ('78) and was worn till late '79.. Sad that this tradition was discontinued. It should be reinstated… This set is original and hard to find. Let me know if you have any questions. 1 Parachute Battalion (Ex Alto Vincimus) is the only full-time paratroop unit of the South African Army. It was founded on 1 April 1961, along with the Parachute Battalion. The battalion has performed many active operations in battle – producing many highly decorated soldiers – in the South African Border War from 1966 to 1989. Their best known action was the controversial Battle of Cassinga in 1978. The unit's nickname "Parabat" is a portmanteau derived from the words "Parachute Battalion".
