Description: HISTORIC ARTWORK ! MASAKO SHINJO WATERCOLOR PAINTING RARE & BEAUTIFUL " WALKING INTO LIGHT " ( DIMENSIONS: APPROX. 36 " x 27 " ) The story of Masako Shinjo is one of the 20th century's most heartbreaking.Born in 1928 in Osaka, Japan, to a factory worker from Okinawa,Masako was sold by her father to a brothel at the age of six. She was separated from her family and was raised in yukaku the red light district of Okinawa to learn the things necessary to entertain men.As she entered her teens, World War Two was now a major part of herdaily life. Forced to serve Japanese soldiers, Masako along with severalother girls, spent the war in servitude until Japan surrendered. She was treated with contempt by locals. Masako envied the women wholived normal lives - free to marry whom they wanted. The Battle of Okinawa was long and fierce. Masako lived in cold, damp caves, unwashed and with little food and no new clothes for months, sleeping on wet cave floors. Her personal suffering knew no limits. As conditions worsened, she was sent by the Japanese to return to her home and was caught by US gunfire. She was laid low, feverish in a sugar cane field, slowly dying. Miraculously she survived. Days later, surrounded by a troop of American GIs, she surrendered and this event actually began a turnaround in her fortunes. Masako worked in the kitchen in a rest house for American troops. She was able to save the leftover bacon grease and sell it.She eventually earned enough to buy her freedom from the brothel. She married an American and arrived in the US in 1952.In 1968, when wanting to buy art for their home she realizedthere was not the type of art she wanted and so she began to paint her own paintings for interior decorating. This began an art career that would last her until her death. She became accomplished very fast and had one man shows inNewport Beach, CA and many other regions. She taught art in Arizona and studied with artists in Okinawa. Her paintings are the most incredibly beautiful watercolors in the world!Masako managed to turn her life of suffering and pain into themost sublime beauty. Only someone who has known such anguish cancreate works of such unmatched beauty. Throughout much of her career open discussion of Masako's lifeas an indentured courtesan was not permissible by the social moresof the art world. Now her life and story can serve as inspiration to millions of peoplewho suffer indignity and inconceivable adversity. Her art is like visiting a world of the most refined love, grace and beauty - a heaven on Earth for the viewer to see the universe through her eyes. This is one her finest works and is a vision! Two figures are walkingin the most breathtaking setting with scintillating trees bursting forth with color! Somehow we just knowthe two are in love. Original painting is excellent condition. Half a century of age wear to the frame.Looks incredibly refined, beautiful & absolutely stunning. This work is truly priceless. While Masako's life and the livesof other WWII courtesans may be forgotten by history, herart will live forever and bring joy to future generations! Historic artwork.
