Description: Sunderland Nautical Plaque This c. 1830 Sunderland Pink Luster Plaque features the saying "Mate Sound the Pump Morning Noon and Night". The central panel, with its transfer-printed nautical message, is set within a mottled pink luster surround with a relief moulded scroll edge with a copper luster glazed finish. This effect was achieved by adding oil to the finish. The wording on the plaque was of critical importance to the survivability of the ship and those on board. It was imperative to know the depth of water in the well of the ship to determine if pumping was necessary. Here was a token of life at sea that could be an everyday reminder at home of the perils of the sea. Made by Dixon & Co. Early to Mid 19th Century but is unmarked. Approx. 9"L X 8"W. These plaques were cheap and plentiful in their day and were known as the "poor man's pictures" reflecting their suitability for adorning walls in relatively humble dwellings or in this case possibly on board a ship. Provenance: Prominent Private Collection Documentation: Marine Art & Antiques: Jack Tar, A Sailor's Life 1750-1910, J. Welles Henderson, page 235 for illustration of similar rare plaque. Condition: Nice condition, minor imperfections to be expected with age. Terms of Sale Please review photos closely. I try and represent items as accurately as possible. Paypal is preferred.
