Description: The ProphetGIBRAN, Kahlil Publisher: Alfred A. KnopfLocation: New York, NYDate: 1923Binding: Octavo, full-bound cloth with gilt illustration to front and title to spine.Edition: FIRST EDITIONPrinting: 1949 Printing Description:First Edition, Later Issue of Kahlil Gibran's masterpiece, The Prophet. Presenting superbly in its scarce original Dust Jacket. A nice example. The Prophet is a collection of poetic essays that are philosophical, spiritual, and, above all, inspirational. Gibran’s musings are divided into twenty-eight chapters covering such sprawling topics as love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, housing, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death. It has been translated into well over 40 languages. By 2012, it had sold more than nine million copies in its American edition alone since its original publication in 1923. Condition:Binding tight and about square with a very mild slant. Full-bound cloth boards present nearly clean and unmarked with just a few pen-sized spots. Crisp, vibrant gilt stamped illustration and title to front. Moderate edge-wear and rubbing to corners and head and foot of spine with a bit of loss and fraying to latter. Spine lightly toned with slight dulling of title. Text blocks clean. Internally fine but for owner's name neatly penned across front pastedown and moderate spotting through first few pages. Dust Jacket presents fairly well. Spotting throughout with several small to more moderate open and closed tears. Soiling to spine and chipping to head and foot with loss. Same, but lighter, to corners. Large open tear to mid-spine as well as head extending to top edge of rear board. Original Price of $2.75 Not Clipped.
