Description: TOBY JUG, POTTERY, “NIGHT WATCHMAN”, STAFFORDSHIRE GEORGIAN. c.1820. Toby Jug, pottery "THE NIGHT WATCHMAN", 9-1/2" high. This figure represents George Whitefield, (1714-1770) the famous Methodist preacher and friend of John Wesley. Whitefield was one of the founders of Methodism and was well known in the USA for his sermons at night by the light of a lamp. Here George Whitefield, the watchman, is seated on an ornate chair that forms the spout. He has a white wig and deep brown coat. He holds his black hat in his lap and an octagonal lantern rests between his feet. The base is marbleized in many colors. The head and hands are well modeled. Made in Staffordshire, c.1810-1830 Condition; Some crazing and cracks to the head; cracks to the base. Some small losses to enamel on chair
