Later adopted into Buddhism, Enma became Enma-ten, the ruler of hell. The Twelve Devas of Buddhism include Enma-ten as a guardian deity, and his name and origins are believed to stem from the same root. There is limited information available on Jyomeiken Suzuki Yoko, leaving his details largely unknown. This tsuba’s three-dimensional carving of the tongue extraction scene is a masterpiece with remarkable presence and detail. On the reverse, items resembling Enma’s records (Enma-chō) and armor are depicted in a form of sukidashibori (raised carving). The exact era of this piece remains uncertain.
