I was immediately drawn to it because it is such a unique and unusual piece. The dealer from whom I purchased it told me that it, most likely, came from the Dolpo people who live in present day Western Nepal and Tibet. Macaque monkeys still inhabit certain regions of Nepal and both the monkey and the drum have significant meanings in Buddhism. Still, the dealer was not sure what the piece symbolizes.
