Description: Irwin Jacob Rosenhouse died in 2002. Several years ago, his estate sold off his remaining prints in a lot. There was an estate sale for the person who purchased those prints in September 2022 and a group of listings for vintage Rosenhouse prints has shown up on ebay. THIS IMAGE WAS KNOWN IN 1968 AS THE "PEACE DOVE". The symbol was created for anti Vietnam War protests in 1968 and was an official symbol of the Peace Parade in New York on April 27. PLEASE NOTE: THE LAST PHOTO IS NOT A PART OF THIS AUCTION: IT IS A PIN BACK FROM 1968 AND THE EDGE STATES THAT IT IS AN "OFFICIAL EMBLEM OF THE PEACE PARADE" "APRIL 27TH 1968 PEACE MARCH" "FIFTH AVENUE VIETNAM PEACE PARADE COMMITTEE, 17 EAST 17TH ST, NEW YORK CITY" THIS WAS A MARCH TO END THE WAR IN VIETNAM The vast majority of the remaining art of Rosenhouse has ended up in the possession of two or three people. Most of what I have are individual prints, mostly silk-screen serigraphs, lithographs and wood block prints, and many were unsigned. Among those was a sealed package of these posters. There are maybe 25 of them. I did not count. I have a few additional strays but they have creases and paper toning, etcetera. This group of 25, however, is like new with only the most minimal of paper toning to the edges The paper is 20" x 24" and there are two silk-screened colors, in addition to the white of the paper. The signature is printed and is in the plate. I have found none with an actual handwritten signature. These poster serigraphs are on either side of fifty five years old and, once I have sold them, they will never be seen in this condition again. Rosenhouse often used the subject matter of children and birds. My guess would be that the black and white hands holding the dove are intended to be those of children. Rosenhouse was a very popular artist in the 1960's and in the 1970's, with his printing shop in downtown New York City. He did artwork for album covers, books, sheet music. If you do a search of his images, you will find many children, many birds and many nude women.... My expectation is that these were printed at the time that this symbolism was common. The dove was used for peace protests during the Vietnam War, and the symbolism was also utilized during the civil rights movement in the 1960's. No words are required on this poster. It was a wish for peace between warring countries and peace between races. The printing was likely completed between 1968-1972. After Watergate, things sort of changed. The condition of this piece, which is "as new", despite being over 50 years old, is what sets it apart. I am selling this individually as I need to understand the potential market. While Rosenhouse as an artist may not command high dollars, the imagery and the condition will. As mid-century modern takes its final bows, the art that will be in demand next will be the hippie art of the 1960's and early 1970's.
