Description: Vintage Hiland Potato Chip Tin. circa 1951From the Hiland Chip company Des Moines and Davenport Iowa. Good condition. Size 7.25" Diameter 11.25" HeightOn May 25, 1936, A. C. Holman, president of the Hiland Potato Chip Co. of Des Moines, announced the opening of a new plant in Davenport. The facility was opened at 517-519 Main street, at a time when their 1 pound box of chips sold for 19 cents. Hiland potato chips were made by a process owned exclusively in this territory by the Hiland company. The machine they used introduced a new method of preparing chips, i.e., washing the potatoes after they had been peeled and sliced, which removed practically all of the starch. After they had been fried at a scientifically correct temperature that sealed the flavor in the chip, they were placed in a baking machine that removed the excess frying fat. Through all of the operations, the product was never touched by human hands. Potato chips had always been considered an extremely fattening food, but Hiland chips were low in starch and fat content, making them non-fattening and more healthful, while retaining their nourishing qualities. Roy E. Murray was named president of the Tri-City plant and he brought his family here from Des Moines to take up residence in the area. The Hiland Potato Chip Co. was incorporated in June of 1950 in Davenport, its principal place of business located in a brand new facility built at 2923 Rockingham Road. The general nature of the business was to engage in purchasing, selling, manufacturing, processing, marketing and distributing potato chips, chili con carne, pop corn, confections and such other food products and merchandise of like kind or character. Roy E. Murray served as president and treasurer; Arthur C. Holman as vice-president and secretary. The company held an open house for the public in their new facility on September 13 and 14, 1951. The plant closed in 1979, however, after it was damaged by fire.Beginning in 1963, Highland potato chips came to be known as the "chippiest chips around" through familiar advertising and a favorite jingle.
