Description: This is a unique and authentic vintage Red Daruma-Wish-Paper Mache Doll. The doll is beautifully hand-painted and showcases the exuberance of Japanese folk culture, a bright contrast to the formality of much of the Japanese aesthetic. That's why I like it. I found it somewhere in Japan while i was travelling and teaching there between 1964 and 1980. I'm guessing I found it in Kyoto in the mid 1970's since I spent a lot of time there, but I also spent 18 months in Okinawa and many months in the Hiroshima area and on the island of Hokkaido, so it could be from any of those places. It has an experienced face, with the undercoat of red showing through the white face paint. I liked that!
