Estate sale find, Vintage Restaurant Menu Headquarters WWII SHAEF Gen Eisenhower Chef New York 1968. Headquarters Restaurant, originally at 108 West 49th Street, was founded with military fanfare in February 1946 by a small army of former G.I.'s led by a Master Sergeant, Marty Snyder, and a former Staff Sergeant, John Schwartz. During World War II, Sergeant Snyder was Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's mess sergeant and chief chef. He had attracted Ike's attention in 1941 during maneuvers in Louisiana when Eisenhower, then a lieutenant colonel, inspected the kitchen. Sergeant Snyder was breaking rules by using spices he had bought himself - Ike liked it. Sergeant Snyder ended up at Supreme Allied Headquarters in Europe, where he prepared meals for Churchill and De Gaulle, among others, and was voted best mess sergeant by Stars and Stripes. Sergeant Schwartz was head service man on Eisenhower's staff, and the two sergeants ran the mess hall for officers and war correspondents. One of the reporters suggested the soldiers open a restaurant after the war. Inside the restaurant was an autographed picture of President Harry S. Truman next to a congratulatory note from Eisenhower, who would occasionally patronize the place. The décor included paintings of scenes from the European and Pacific war zones. Besides the usual roast beef and turkey, entrees included lamb stew à la Eisenhower. Mr. Snyder left it in 1952 and Mr. Schwartz moved it in the 1960's to 871 Seventh Avenue at 55th Street, where it operated until 1973.
