WILLIAM FIELDS - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 01/06/1936 - HFSID 67399 WILLIAM FIELDS Broadway publicist William Fields signed this letter, typed on letterhead of Zoe Akins' Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Old Maid, in 1936 to promote Akin's newest play, O Evening Star. Typed letter signed "Wm Fields" in purple ink. 1 page, 8½x11, on letterheat of the play The Old Maid at Broadway's Empire Theatre. Jan. 6, 1936. In full: "Dear Miss Spencer: first of all let me thank you for your Christmas card. It was the most original and interesting of the more than 200 that I received this year. Today Zoe Akin was in my office and I asked her to let me have her signature for your column. It is herewith enclosed. Her full name you know is Zoe Akins Rumbold, her husband, Captain Hugo Rumbold (deceased) having been an eminent English scenic designer and an officer of the Grenadier Guards during the World War. Miss Akin was born in Humansville, Mo., and started her writing career on a St Louis newspaper. Her first play, 'The Magical City,' was produced in 1919. 'O Evening Star' is her 19th produced play. Last year she won the Pulitzer prize with 'The Old Maid.' Can you arrange to see 'O Evening Star' this Friday evening (10th). I'll be happy to have seats for you if you'll be good enough to call me at Chickering 4-0049. With best wishes for the New Year. Sincerely, William Fields". Fields was a press representative for The Old Maid (1935), which earned Akins a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Author, playwright and screenwright ZOE AKINS (1886-1958) also wrote the Broadway hit The Greeks Have a Word For It (1930-1931), which was adapted to film twice, the second time as the Marilyn Monroe movie How to Marry a Millionaire (1953). Her play O Evening Star (1936) was, like The Old Maid, produced at the Empire Theatre by Harry Moses. WILLIAM FIELDS was a longtime publicist on Broadway. He handled publicity for 57 Broadway productions between 1930 and 1961, including the original Broadway productions of The Old Maid, Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1938-1939), Anne of the Thousand Days (1948-1949), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955-1956) and The Pleasure of His Company (1958-1959). Lightly toned and creased. Paper clip impressions and rust stains at left edge and top left corner. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
