Description: William Selby-Lowndes Jr. MFH Whaddon Chase Spy Print The World Vanity Fair 1910 W. Selby Lowndes Jun’r, M.F.H. by “Spy” (Sir Leslie Matthew Ward, 1851–1922, the artist who is famous for producing so many prints for Vanity Fair, and produced a smaller number for The World 1910-1911) Supplement to The World, Feb. 15, 1910 Chromolithograph by Gilbert Whitehead & Co., Ltd., New Eltham, S.E. Rare Image size: approx. 10 x 14.5 in. (25.4 x 36.83 cm) I would classify this in Good condition for its age. The top-right corner is bumped, and the top-left corner a bit less so. These would be covered up by framing. There are a couple of very small brown spots in the top right quadrant of the image, and a bump which looks like a small wrinkle just above the image toward the top right. Still a fantastic print in my humble opinion! Please see photos as they form an integral part of the description. William Selby Lowndes Junior, joint master of the Whaddon Chase Hounds I also have listed Charles F. P. McNeill, M.F.H., by Spy,from The World. These two would make a great pair framed! From Wikipedia: Sir Leslie Matthew Ward (1851–1922) wasa British portrait artistand caricaturist whoover four decades painted 1,325 portraits which were regularly publishedby Vanity Fair, under the pseudonyms “Spy” and “Drawl”.The portraits were produced as watercolours andturned into chromolithographs for publication in the magazine. Thesewere then usually reproduced on better paper and sold as prints. Such was hisinfluence in the genre that all Vanity Fair caricatures aresometimes referred to as “Spy cartoons” regardless of who the artist actuallywas. Early portraits, almost always full-length (judges at thebench being the main exception), had a stronger element of caricature andusually distorted the proportions of the body, with a very large head and upperbody supported on much smaller lower parts. Later, as he became more acceptedby his social peers, and in order not to offend potential sitters, his styledeveloped into what he called “characteristic portraits”. This was less of acaricature and more of an actual portrait of the subject, using realistic bodyproportions.
