Inscribed by Willie Brown, Jr. to super lobbyist Donald C. Burns for Jackie Speier, who then gifted it. Laid in is a letter from Jackie Speier, on her stationary, to Burns. Willie Brown, Jr: Willie Brown has long been a major figure in Democrat politics and fund-raising. He served over 30 years in the California State Assembly, including 15 years as its speaker. The first African-American mayor of San Francisco, the San Francisco Chronicle referred to him as "one of San Francisco's most notable mayors" who had "celebrity beyond the city's boundaries." Indeed, he appeared in several movies, including The Godfather, Part III, and The Princess Diaries, and the West Span of the San Francisco Bay bridge is named in his honer. In the 1970's he was a supporter of Jim Jones and the People's Temple, speaking out against the ill-fated investigation and "was especially lavish in his praise of Jones, calling him “a combination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Angela Davis, Albert Einstein, and Chairman Mao.” He was an early promoter of the career of Kamala Harris, with whom he had an extended affair. Jackie Speier: Democrat "politician who currently serves as U.S. Representative for California's 14th congressional district, serving in Congress since 2008. She is a member of the Democratic Party.. She represents much of the territory that had been represented by her political mentor, Leo Ryan. In 1978, while working as his aide, Speier survived five gunshot wounds during the assassination of Ryan, part of the Jonestown massacre. "... Mr. Burns was honored by the ASAE as recipient of its highest honor, the "ASAE Key Award."... also served as California's Deputy Chief of Protocol for eight years under Governor George Deukmejian. On March 12, 2007, the California State Senate unanimously adopted and presented him with a Senate Resolution extending him "special honors and the highest commendation for his exemplary record of service to the people of the State of California." The resolution came on his having achieved 50 years of service to the Legislature as advocate. Co-authored by Republican and Democratic Party leaders in the Senate, it was the first time in the state's history that a lobbyist was accorded the honor of being invited to being present on the Senate floor while in session, and more significantly, invited to address the Senate following the presentation and speeches made honoring him by present and former members of the Senate present for the occasion... also was appointed by the President of Austria as that nation's Consul General of Austria in San Francisco, serving for 17 years before retiring in 2008.
