Description: Wrigley's Chewing Gum Vintage 1923 CALENDAR Chicago Baseball History Disney 100 Historic Twentieth Century Treasures from Saturday's Toys presents... a vintage advertising calendar from 1923... as issued by the Chicago company founded in 1891 by William Mills Wrigley, Jr. (1861 - 1932). Born in Chicago on December 5, 1894, Philip Knight Wrigley (1894 - 1977; aka P.K. Wright) would assume leadership of his father's Wrigley chewing gum interests in 1923. One of his first major initiatives was to launch a new product... "Wrigley's P.K. Chewing Sweet" at the early age of 29. While the brand has largely faded from modern view, still, it gave him the opportunity to move from his rather shy demeanor to gain the confidence that he would need in further developing one of the world's most successful brands. Of particular note, another famous Chicago native was born on December 5... exactly seven years after P.K. Wrigley was born. The newborn child born in Chicago on December 5, 1901... was Walter Elias Disney. In 1923, just as Philip Wrigley launched his "P.K. Chewing Sweet"... he also saw the nationwide distribution of this small 12-month calendar; offered to shoppers for free with the purchase of his newest product. The historic calendar measures 3.75" x 5.5". Only a few weeks later, Walt Disney boarded the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railway's "California Limited" with a First Class ticket (the only ticket sold for the California Limited!)... and soon arrived at the La Grande Station in downtown Los Angeles. On October 16, 1923... Walt Disney and his brother, Roy founded their brand new cartoon studio... nearly 100 years ago. Accurately understanding that tourists would appreciate a new Southern California leisure destination, Wm. Wrigley Jr. purchased the Santa Catalina Island Company in 1919 (yes, he bought the entire island). The destination became the most prominent tourist attraction in Southern California... until 1955 when Walt Disney built his own theme park in the orange groves of Anaheim... and the rest, is history. While William Wrigley Jr. had, in 1921, purchased his controlling interest in the Los Angeles Angels baseball team (Pacific Coast League)... it was his purchase of the Chicago Cubs that gave both he and his son, P.K., a source of great pride in the many years that followed. Notably, as the Los Angeles Angels considered their own future on the west coast... it was Walt Disney who was given the opportunity to serve on the team's Board of Directors...while the team was still playing at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles during 1960... until his passing in December 1966. Without a doubt, it was Walt Disney's clout in Southern California that "sealed the deal" in bringing the "California Angels" to Anaheim Stadium in the Spring of 1966. In another unexpected turn of events... all three men: William Wrigley Jr., Walt Disney, and Philip K. Wrigley... are buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
