If in doubt, please contact us and we'll be happy to make sure you get the right fit for your Rickenbacker Bass! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK, So What Is It? ================================================================================================== A custom thumb rest for the Rickenbacker 4003, requiring ZERO modifications to your bass! This is the same as our Classic 4003 Edition thumb rest - but NOW IN BLACK. After many requests we finally got them out for you! (Please see our other listings if you are not familiar with it - There are more pics and info.) If you are a fingerstyle player with a Rickenbacker 4001 or 4003, you know there is no really good place to "hang your thumb" - You see many Rics with a wear spot at the corner of the pickguard, where players try to "dig in", and many Rics with the chrome cover removed from the bridge pickup to allow finger style access. I designed this for my own 4003 as I wanted to make it more comfortable to play and keep the "cover on" as the classic look that is a big part of this bass for many Ric fans. (The 4001 model, 4003 model and 4003v2 model are each custom made for the particular bass. They are very similar in design, but not quite interchangeable if you want the fit and look to be "right on".All models MUST use the appropriate version - See "Ric Particulars" notes below. This thumb rest is made out of one quarter inch thick high quality acrylic, and precision CNC made in a machine shop here in the USA. The position and design mean NO NEW HOLES in your bass! Includes two pick guard screws that are slightly longer than the original Ric pickguard screws, so you do not even change the size of the existing screw holes by adding this on. It is almost invisible on a black guard from a few feet away. RIC PARTICULARS - Due to variations in models and years and the EXACT FIT these are made to, it is not possible to offer a "one size fits all" version - Believe me it would make our lives easier! Our 4003 model rest will fit all one-piece guards issued thru 2014. (No issues we know about as of now.) That includes the pre-2014 4003S and 4003W as well. The 2-piece guards on the first 4003's from the early '80's (before they changed the truss rod adjustment to the headstock from the body) might require our 4001 rest. For the best fit there, please contact us. The transition years for the 4003 were 2014 and 2015. Standard 4003's were being sold with standard guards, and the 4003W and 4003S began the phase-in of the new, retro style guards which (IMHO) are like a 4003 on the lower lobe and a 4001 on the upper lobe. These new 4003 models take the 4003v2 rest. The 4001 model, fits the 1975 and onward bass. As a rule, it doesn't fit 1974 and earlier. The transition went across the model years -1975 through 1978 - so you need to measure (see below). Please check your neck pickup - if it is about an inch from the fingerboard, the 4001 unit should fit. If your 4001 has the neck pickup close (about 1/2 inch) from the fingerboard, it likely requires our 4001vtg87 rest! The 4001S bass is yet again different - on more recent ones, the standard 4001 model seems to fit; others require the 90mm custom version (if you need the custom version, please email for price and availability before buying). The 4001C64 edition - Special order - email for price and availability before buying! The 4001V63 edition - Special order - email for price and availability before buying! For Ric-style pickguards on Non-Ric basses: We have a few of our 4003 rests out on Tokai Ric copies now, and they fit well.We're not familiar with all the variations out there, but it may fit more. When in doubt,send us an email with a picture of your bass. Will it Fit? Best Method: Measure the distance between the two screws - (screw center to screw center of the screws above the neck pickup that you would use to mount the thumb rest) 84 mm is a classic 4003 (requires the 4003 rest) 85 mm is a newer style 4001 (requires the 4001 rest) 85 mm can also be a 2015 and later guard 4003, but the fit is not interchangeable -- requires a 4003v2 rest) 87 mm on the older style 4001 and some of the custom models (requires the 4001vtg87 rest).
